Round up of Antwerp America foundations’ event with David Cattler

Drawing on decades of experience in intelligence, security, and transatlantic cooperation, David Cattler examined the fragile link between power, trust, and leadership during the AAF-breakfast meeting on September 16 at the Chamber of Commerce Antwerpen-Waasland. Having spent years at the heart of the US and NATO intelligence systems Cattler reflected on the central theme of the morning talk: possible threats to our critical infrastructure, i.e. the port of Bruges-Antwerp.

From a macro perspective the intelligence expert emphasized the urgency of defense strategies against the shadow wars of Russia in Europe. He warned against the gradual erosion of trust in our historical partners and allies even when relations appear under pressure nowadays.

When certainty disappears a long-term vision is key, it was argued. As well as a commitment to our open democratic values.

Cattler reiterated that Moscow’s aim is not to provoke NATO but to break European and American will to support Ukraine, and to break European solidarity. The expert made clear that Moscow’s aim is to change the European security architecture.

Cattler’s reflection on the weakening transatlantic alliance explored how democracies can and should balance power, trust, and legitimacy in this era of growing global uncertainty.
