Antwerp America Foundation welcomes William Drozdiak

March 21st | 6.30 PM @Voka – Antwerp-Waasland Chamber of Commerce

The war between Russia and Ukraine starkly illustrates Europe’s vulnerability in an era of resurgent big-power rivalry. But with Putin demolishing the European security order, the European Union gave an unexpected strong answer. The 180 degrees turnaround asks the question what the future role of the European Union will be.

One of the most knowledgeable observers of European affairs, William Drozdiak, will join the Antwerp America Foundation to give his view about the future of Europe given the recent developments.

He is currently senior advisor for Europe with McLarty Associates, an international strategic consultancy firm based in Washington DC and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Drozdiak served from 2005 to 2015 as president of the American Council on Germany, one of the most prestigious of non-profit organizations devoted to cooperation and understanding between the United Staes, Germany and Europe. Before that he was founding Executive Director of the Transatlantic Center in Brussels, an independent, non-partisan think tank for US-European relations.

President Emmanuel Macron of France has taken the lead in Europe and has warned that the European Union could find itself trapped, even victimized, by power struggles involving Russia, but also China and the United States. It is high time, he believes, for Europe to develop the capabilities necessary to defend its own strategic interests. Macron’s ambitions for Europe as a global power will be tested in these weeks and months to come.

In his latest book, The Last President of Europe: Emmanuel Macron’s Race to Revive France and Save the World, Drozdiak focuses on France’s president and his efforts to shape the future of Europe and a new world order. Macron told Drozdiak, in several interviews for his book, that the European Union urgently needs to wake up and address what he calls the existential challenges threatening Europe’s future..

We gladly welcome you on March 21st at 6 PM at the Chamber of Commerce in Antwerp, Markgravestraat 12. The entry is free, but registration is required.

Drozdiak is author of “Fractured Continent: Europe’s crisis and the Fate of the West”, which was selected by the Financial Times as one of the best political books in 2017. His latest book is “The last president of Europe: Emmanuel Macron’s race to revive France and Save the World”, a chronicle about the first turbulent years of Macron’s presidency and his ambition to invigorate the European Union in an era of resurgent big-power rivalry.
